Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) also known as Voice over IP utilizes your Internet connection to establish telephone communication. You pay for Internet Services only and with these tools your non-profit can make phone calls for free - computer to computer.

Tokbox

Tokbox is the latest rage in web based communications. Skype may have a hold over the free video and voice calls at the moment, but don't forget, this is the technological world and there's always another disruptive technology that comes along. The amazing thing about Tokbox is that it does not require downloading software!

Skype

You might say this is obvious, but in reality, there are still people out there that do not use Skype and need help using it! This is our favorite Internet calling software and although techies don't like the fact that the source is closed, most of them will agree that Skype has the best quality thus far.

Pidgin

We just had to put Pidgin here since we support free and open source software ;) Most of the Linux guys that iGetcha has talked to prefer Pidgin over Skype. For some reason, Skype doesn't work well on Linux machines (ie you sometimes cannot see everyone online since it's an early version of Skype, you cannot share your screen, et cetera).

Gizmo5

Recently, Gizmo5 was taken over by Google so keep on the lookout for the Google Gizmo5/Voice application to compete with Skype. And it seems it may be here with free calls on Gmail.

Gtalk

Gtalk is Google's alternative to Skype. Use this application to call computer-to-computer for free as long as the software is installed on the caller's and receiver's computers :) But now with Google Voice, you can make phone calls for free in the US and Canada!

Yahoo! Messenger

Yahoo! Messenger is yet another call and chat application. It is one of the mainstream VoIP applications and may end up being stronger as the Microsoft - Yahoo deal evolves. With MSN messenger and Yahoo! messenger, the merger could take advantage of the user-base by combining them. If you're a non-profit that uses one of these and prefers it over Skype, then you may find more people joining you soon.
