iGetcha.org is a suggested opensource and free software directory for the technological sustainability of nonprofits. It's also a simple, non-techie shortlist to assist organizations with a SOHO.
gNewSense is a free operating system and is a GNU/Linux distribution. As you might have noticed, the iGetcha team supports free software for nonprofits and NGOs, and as an example of GNU, gNewSense takes the word "free" to the level of idealism we seek as a community.
The confusion is, the word "free" as we describe it is not how Richard Stallman and GNU would describe it. For iGetcha.org, "free" means free to download and use. Although as we mentioned in other writings, there are still costs associated to downloading software unfortunately. Now, "Free" according to Richard Stallman is "Freedom". And as a community, this is our real aspiration. We do not want to get into semantics and connotation linguistic theory too much, so just think about what is stated on GNU's website:
"freedom to run, copy, distribute, study, change and improve"
As written in our "About Us" page, we really think GNU is cool but for some reason, some people don't get it. Basically, operating systems and software that we mention on iGetcha.org may not be fully free according to GNU. For instance by default, Debian and Ubuntu installs non-free (as in GNU "free") software. Maybe this adds another level of confusion to our site as a supporter of open source and free software novices, but all we have to say is that if you really believe in freedom, gNewSense and other GNU/Linux distributions are the way to go in terms of software.
gNewSense is completely free and is as user-friendly as Ubuntu.
