iGetcha.org is a suggested opensource and free software directory for the technological sustainability of nonprofits. It's also a simple, non-techie shortlist to assist organizations with a SOHO.
iGetcha actually prefers Xubuntu over Puppy Linux just because Xubuntu comes installed with more common applications such as Open Office and Thunderbird, but if you want something really light weight, you should consider Puppy Linux. One thing that is cool about Puppy Linux is that it is a very small iso file. In fact, it is around 105Mb so this makes the OS easily transferrable on a USB or DVD/CD with data already on it! Also, since most of our recommendations will download easier with high speed bandwidth, this may be the alternative to lower the costs associated to downloading in an Internet cafe.
Check out Puppy Linux only if you want really light weight apps that are not as mainstream. For example, you would need to install Open Office if you wanted it on your system because Puppy comes installed with Gnome Office. For nonprofits, keep in mind that this will bring to life a lot of small hard drive computers with old processors so iGetcha recommends checking it out if you want to start a recycling project. Again for youth development, we still recommend Sugar on a Stick ;)
