iGetcha.org is a suggested opensource and free software directory for the technological sustainability of nonprofits. It's also a simple, non-techie shortlist to assist organizations with a SOHO.
Big Hello to all, this community is cool. Been looking for something like this. My question pertains to mobile solutions. Are there any mobile recommendations that nonprofits can use? Also in India, it is a lot easier to use a mobile for Internet because Internet cafes are expensive. Is the site viewable on a mobile as well? I think India nonprofits would find this very useful because they could scan the site on their mobile and then, download the apps they need at an Internet cafe. I think this site should add some cell phone app suggestions for ngos too.
Best,
AJ

Hi AJ,
Yes, iGetcha is viewable on a cell phone/mobile :) we have not tested every environment but it worked okay on Opera Mini 4 for us. We used an older Motorola so we think this should be a good way for nonprofits in India to scan the site.
In terms of posting free, mobile solutions on the site, the iGetcha team debated this topic a lot. Currently, we have decided not to put any free, mobile software on the site. One of the reasons is that we don't want to create too much clutter on the site. Also, we are still exploring this area and as you probably know, the mobile world is changing quickly so the learning curve can be steep for some. And, the requirement of a steep learning curve continually divides the non-techies and the techies.
Here, iGetcha wants to get the non-techie nonprofits in a better position to understand the basic, techie stuff. And, get the community to help and collaborate when the technology is highly applicable to the nonprofit world. For instance, we love Ushahidi and they offer an open source platform for crisis response and you can report incidents by sms. This can have a great impact on crisis management for tragic situations such as Haiti. The disadvantage for nonprofits is that implementing an Ushahidi platform varies on nonprofits' technical abilities.
Nonprofits and NGOs can definitely use technologies such as Ushahidi to help others. On iGetcha, we want to focus on the mission of getting the free, simple and usable software to nonprofits and then, they can transfer this knowledge to digitally divided communities. We basically want the user friendly stuff to make it to those who cannot find these options easily.
Hope this helps clarify... Thanks for everyone's comments!

Good points. One thing I forgot to remember is that not everyone in the world has iPhones and Android phones yet.

Due popular demand, the iGetcha Team is adding a mobile tools category for nonprofits to reference. We will try to update this category with free and open source software that nonprofits can utilize as per our mission. In an effort to monitor open innovation development, the iGetcha Team will try its best to test and review mobile applications that may be helpful to nonprofit and community initiatives.
Thanks!
